Tenikka Colston-Bouler grew up as the daughter of an Apostolic pastor until she was in her early teens and her dad switched to the Baptist tradition. She alternated staying with her father and her biological mother until she had her first child out of wedlock at 17. Despite the comments from parishioners and the hardships she faced growing up as a pastor’s daughter, Colston-Bouler says today she finds strength in things from growing up in the church like the power of prayer and family time. She also emulates the “first ladies,” the older ladies of the church she looked up to, in how she dresses and carries herself.
